question re sheet to tiller steering and genoa

I have found that it is much, much easier to get sheet to tiller steering to work with the small jib than with the genoa. In fact, an electronic autopilot seems to work more easily with the small jib than with the genoa. Am I the only one who has found this? Or do I simply need to do a better job of trimming the sails (including the genoa) and balancing the boat before setting up the sheet to tiller steering?
