Hull - Deck join

Inlägg av Pancho »

Hello All,

My first post here - I have bought an 1979 IF here in the UK and am fixing her up ready for next season.

My boat is leaking - through deck fittings, through windows, and the hull-deck join. I am making good progress with deck fittings and windows but need your advice about my hull-deck join.

Some parts of my hull-deck join have opened 4-5 mm. I am going to put sealant all the way around but I am tempted to reinforce the hull deck join by injecting epoxy with a syringe before doing so. If it was just a small 2-3mm gap I wouldn't bother but as there is really quite a big gap I think it needs some reinforcement.

I'd be grateful for any advice - I will add some photos if I can work out how to.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Good luck with the sealing process. My boat was leaking like a sieve when I bought it and I spent a lot of hours last spring doing the work that you are now doing. The satisfaction of a dry boat makes the effort worthwhile I think.

I had some variation in my gap as well, with an opening much like the one your pictures are showing. I don't think it has to mean there is a problem with the critical part of the deck/hull joint. In case you haven't seen it I'm attaching the plan for the joint below. The deck and hull are mated over a reasonably wide area.

I don't know if it's a known issue for the joint to fail in a way that would warrant reinforcement. I'm sure some more experienced posters will let you know if that is the case.

Below I'm showing the width of my new seal which was about the minimum needed to comfortably cover all irregularities in the width of my gap. It's about 400ml of Simson MSR CA sealant in total for reference.

I am with Andreas89 on this. Just add a wide enough sealant string to cover the gap and the irregularities!

I also use Simson MSR CA. I think 2 x 290 ml is enough and will even leave some over for other fittings.

Thanks very much for your advice and the picture of the joint. Really useful and matches with what my local boatbuilder has said too. It feels quite unnatural to be putting sealant over a big gap like that!

Thanks again,

James

Also check that no genoa track screw leaks. There are many!

Thanks All,

Going to use the Bostic sealant as suggested.

Lots of leaks all around the deck fittings too so I’m removing and re-sealing all of those, and the windows too.

Use large washers from inside. Especially the very forward "triangle" should not carry weight if not very well supported from inside. The best is to make a supporting washer plate from AISI 316 acid proof steel almost as large as the deck plate,

Don't put the "fence" back on the boat. The boat is so much prettier without!
