inboard diesel

Inlägg av otter »

I am looking at buying an IF that has an outboard. Is it possible to put a volvo md1b in a folkboat or would the weight deter too much from the performance?

Inboard

It is more the drag from the propellor than the actual weight of the engine that reduces performance. We reckon about 2%.

The weight comes into play more when beating into a swell with light winds. A pendulum effect happens and you can feel her slow up. This is overcome if there is enough wind to get you to maximum hull speed.

I beleive a Volvo MD1B is an old type of motor from the mid 70-ties or early 80-ties. Today you will get a more modern diesel if you want to convert to inbord. Maybe there are also good petrol engine alternatives, which will be xx and maybe easier to install.

It is possible to make an inboard conversion. But this is not a job for a happy amanteur, unless you really know what you are doing. So if you want an IF-boat with an inboard engine (called IF-E in Sweden)´, it is better to buy such a boat directly. Even if the motor is worn out or defective and thus perhaps worthless, it is easier to replace an inboard engine than convert.

The Swedish National Handicap Systen, so called "LYS"("time on time" handicap) estimates the over all general performance of an IF-E to be 3 % less than that of an standard IF-boat. For a Marieholm 26 or 261 the over all general performance is estimated to be 4 % less than that of the standard IF. .

I can only agree with Maja. You will be much better off i you find an IF-E with a worn out or even collapsed diesel engine. Such an IF in Sweden will cost you SEK 45000 - 65000 and you need "only" to put in a new engine and you will not have to change the rudder, not have to drill for a new axis, not have to build a totally new motor bed, etc, etc.
