Re: A rotten mastbeam

So, I successfully installed a beam! It's wasn't difficult, but I'm terribly tired. Maybe, it is just too important part  First fit and glueing by epoxy: 8wFSKuUMq_w.jpg And after a long uninspiring drilling it ready: wlhYfLEwKRI.jpg Spacer: bRoYWx8jN8c.jpg And my favorite filler for epoxy ...

Re: A rotten mastbeam

Hi Class-rules says that the beam must be made of marineplywood. If you dont participate in races, it doesn't matter. I wonder how you will make the beam fit against the underside deck. Will you use wood? Or are you going to use steel? It looks like a good job. Looking forward to seeing the final r...

Re: A rotten mastbeam

Steel beam in progress. It will be attached to the bulkhead by eight M10 bolts and nuts and also glued with epoxy. Under the step I'll attach a wooden spacer with epoxy. eaOdv0oVsMM.jpg G3YPKv-0r7Y.jpg PozMorpSNac.jpg mlmHNu8aZgs.jpg I has used a lot of similar heavy loaded connections (wood or lami...

Re: A rotten mastbeam

That's bad to find right now when you want to use the boat. You way find useful information on changing the beam in this thread: http://www.ifboat.se/forum/22/1583#p7890 It's in swedish, but there are lots of photos when I made a new beam of baltic birch plywood and laminated back to the boat...

A rotten mastbeam

After launching my IF, I decided to disassemble interior to repair and paint it parts at home, in my workshop. But suddenly, I was very surprised with a mast beam. "Oh shiii" - I said, when saw the exploded fiberglass envelope around a beam. jxyJJMZwEqs.jpg Plywood got wet for a long time....

Re: To grind or not to grind?

It was difficult, but I done it! That is all for the bottom. Now I need a little holiday. CL2irMkH92I.jpg sn-FFTYhaUw.jpg I think, antifouling is not nessesary for cold waters, where I planning to sail this summer. There are grows only a bit of seagrass like a green snots, which are easily cleaned o...

Re: To grind or not to grind?

Oh yes! Just a 5kg of epoxy and a first layer is complete. And it didn't even need to mix any filler. The temperature was around +10C and the resin was quite viscous in its pure form. I'm tired to roll it out to surface.

Re: To grind or not to grind?

That looks good! I think it is clean enough for the epoxy painting. Those last old Polygrund primer rests wont have to be removed. Follow the instructions for the epoxi resin. Wait for some days with good weather, so that you can paint the layers with the proposed settling time between. If you wait...

Re: To grind or not to grind?

I'm started. Today I was scraped all the left board and I wasnt found there any osmosis or blisting. It's great! I think, that "black paint" was exactly that "barrier layer". It have a perfect adhesion to the gelcoat, and it very hard to scrap. In short, I mean, that is not nesse...
